Dr. Kopansky-Giles graduated with her degree in Physical and Health Education from the University of Western Ontario and graduated from CMCC in 1982. She attained her Fellowship in Chiropractic Sciences in 1993 and completed her MSc from the University of Bournemouth, UK in 2010 where she won the Graham Heale award for highest proficiency in a Master of Science program. Dr. Kopansky-Giles is also a Fellow of the College of Chiropractic Rehabilitation Sciences and was recognized as a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors. Dr. Kopansky-Giles is a Professor in the Department of Graduate Education and Research at CMCC, and is coordinator of Integrative Care and Care Research at CMCC. She is a clinician-scientist on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) and is cross-appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Dr. Kopansky-Giles has served on various local, national and international organizations. She represents the chiropractic profession worldwide as a member of the International Coordinating Council of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health (formerly known as the UN Bone and Joint Decade) and represents the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) on the World Federation of Chiropractic Executive Council. Deborah is on the Steering Committee for Bone and Joint Canada and is a member of the Global Spine Care Initiative Scientific Secretariat and on the organizing team for World Spine Care. Deborah has also been a member of the CCA Board and was a Board member for the Ontario Chiropractic Association from 1991- 2000. Dr. Kopansky-Giles has been appointed to numerous provincial and national advisory groups. She currently co-chairs a national working group for the College of Family Physicians of Canada focused on teaching and assessment of the CanMEDs competencies. She was on the MOHLTC Quality Based Pathway for Spine Pain Expert Working Group, and the MOHLTC Low Back Education Planning Committee. She also has participated on several national and international conference organizing committees such as the International Conference on Integrated Care, the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health World Summit Conference, the WFC Biennial Congress, the CCA National Conference Planning Committee and the University of Toronto DFCM Conference Planning Committee. She is an award-winning researcher with numerous publications, including two book chapters, and has presented at numerous interdisciplinary conferences nationally and internationally. Dr. Kopansky-Giles also supervises CMCC student and resident research projects. She oversees the chiropractic program at St. Michael’s Hospital and supervises chiropractic residents in clinical practice at the Hospital, in addition to teaching in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. She co-chairs St. Michael’s Hospital DFCM IPE committee which oversees the development, delivery and evaluation of interprofessional education programs in the department.
Current research interests are in the field of integrated health service delivery models in hospital and other multidisciplinary settings and interprofessional health education.
