Biography

Dr. Howitt graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1996 with an Honours BA, with a major in Physical Education. He graduated from CMCC in 2000 and completed his Sports Sciences Residency in 2002. He went on to complete his second Fellowship in Rehabilitational Sciences in 2005. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Additionally, Dr. Howittt is a Director of Sports Performance Centres Ltd. (SPC) a multidisciplinary sports injury clinic and the Varsity chiropractic for the University of York. Dr. Howitt is a member of the Influential Educators working group, CMCC’s Exercise Biomechanics Research Committee, CCSS(c)’s Fellowship Committee, CCRS(c)’s Education Committee, and the CCSS(c) Residency Committee. His clinic SPC, is a placement host for CMCC interns and University of York 3rd year athletic therapy students.

Research Interests

Dr. Howitt has a keen interest in sports biomechanics and the mechanisms of athletic injuries. His interests are to further the understanding of muscle firing and patterning associated with diagnosing injuries with an eye towards the potential for performance enhancement. Current and recently completed research projects include patient management case studies utilizing Active Release Techniques, Graston Soft Tissue Technique and/or the multidisciplinary management for sports injuries. Specific conditions of interest include common sporting injuries such as overuse tendonopathies, muscle strains and concussions. More recently he has begun to delve into the area of nutrition for performance and injury prevention as he pursues his Masters in Science in Health and Nutrition at the University of Guelph.
